An important requirement for obtaining a loan as an illegal immigrant is having a social security number. It also helps if you have a bank account in the U.S. and have a steady source of income. Lenders will often require a down payment of about 20 percent of the total purchase price, though it can be higher. They also want to be sure you'll be able to repay the loan.
In the past, illegal immigrants could not obtain a mortgage without a Social Security number, which is essential for getting a mortgage. Moreover, without a Social Security number, many lenders rejected these applicants, making them more vulnerable to fraud. However, there is a new way around these restrictions. Rep. John Doolittle has introduced a bill, H.R. 480, that prohibits banks from issuing residential mortgages to people without a Social Security number.
Many banks have started offering mortgages for illegal immigrants to purchase homes. Moreover, some of these banks now allow these individuals to obtain an ITIN (individual tax identification number) through ITIN mortgages. These mortgages are almost equivalent to any other mortgage, and some home loan companies offer them across the country. If you're an illegal immigrant in the U.S., you have to make sure your income is taxed accordingly.
