Assistance Benefits For Sponsor Immigrants

There are many ways to obtain assistance benefits for sponsor immigrants. First, a petitioner must demonstrate that they have sufficient income and assets to avoid becoming a "public charge" in case the immigrant needs public assistance. If the immigrant does end up claiming public assistance, the sponsor must promise to pay the government back. If a sponsor does not meet these requirements, the immigrant may be considered a public charge, especially if he or she has health problems or no apparent source of income.

Moreover, immigration law requires a sponsor to sign an affidavit of support to prove financial support for the sponsored alien. This contract, also known as an Affidavit of Support, commits the sponsor to support the sponsored immigrant in exchange for obtaining public benefits. If the sponsor cannot afford to pay the alien, he or she may be sued by the government to reimburse him or her.

The government can also rely on cash welfare assistance to support an immigrant's legal status. In some cases, cash welfare assistance is the only income for the family, and Medicaid pays for long-term institutional care. However, the government must determine whether the applicant can support himself or herself in the future, and receiving welfare benefits may not hurt the chances of getting a Green Card. As long as the sponsor is healthy and has a job, the immigrant's financial situation should not affect their chance of getting a Green Card.
